How Hashtags are used in Twitter

Twitter is a social networking and micro-blogging site, started in 2006. Twitter has almost 200 million users worldwide.

Hashtags are often used by people on twitter to organise conversations about one subject or event, so that everyone talking about it can be gathered together. They also help tweets to show up when someone searches for the hashtag topic. For example: #ukraine and #earthquake

A very common use of hashtags on twitter is for competitions and giveaways – using the hashtag makes it easy for people to see all tweets containing that hash tag and tweet about the competition/giveaway etc

For example: I'm doing a new giveaway! Reply with why you want this prize & include #HappyNewYear http://www#.com/HappyNewYear

Hashtags are more popular on Twitter, but there are some hashtags used on other social networking sites such as Facebook, Google+ and Instagram

For example: Twitter uses #ThrowbackThursday to share nostalgic photos of their youth, whereas Facebook users use #tbt

Twitter also encourages the use of hashtags for publicising events using Twitter, commonly known as Twitterbombing . It is just a concerted effort by people tweeting about an event or promotion using the same hashtag at once. For example: Got my tickets for @Muse in July! I am so excited! Hooray! #Muse

Another way of being able to follow conversations is by searching Twitter via keywords or Twitter accounts . Twitter also provides a search engine of hashtags called 'What's Happening' which can be accessed at Twitter.com/whats_new

These are just a few Twitter hashtags; Twitter has many more, and users continue to make up new ones for different themes

Hashtags can be created organically when people follow each other on Twitter and become part of the same community with common interests. Then they start using the #hashtag to add their tweet to that community or event

For example: I really like my @Zara jeans! #ZaraJeans

Hashtags don't have an end date but mostly disappear after a while if no one continues to use them. For example: The hash tag #FashionBloggers was popular for quite a while but eventually no one used it anymore and Twitter stopped displaying the link to this hashtag in Twitter Search

Hashtags are useful on Twitter as they allow you to see all tweets that have been posted using that same hashtag word. This allows individual tweets within a specific event or time period to be grouped together, making it easier to follow a conversation without having lots of different Twitter feeds open at the same time.

For example: I love my @Zara jeans! #ZaraJeans
